Overview

Keystone served as the Principal Contractor for the trapping and translocation of common lizards, grass snakes, adders, and slow worms from this 80-hectare upland site in South Wales.

The project included installing and managing a compound that at its peak accommodated approximately 80 operatives.

Challenge

  • This project is set in a location with complex ground conditions and terrain, characterised by mine workings, peri-glacial geological features, and weather extremes. These factors collectively presented significant risks to machinery, staff, public health and safety, and the environment. Due to such unforeseen ground conditions, extensive reprofiling of access routes for large equipment was necessary.
  • Further challenges included managing fire risks (given the history of arson), ecological constraints, archaeological impacts, and sourcing a large seasonal workforce while adhering to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) targets.

Approach

Habitats

  • In preparation for the trapping and translocation works, we undertook extensive management of scrub and bracken, using robotic tool carriers to provide both mechanical and chemical control.
  • We created 420 linear meters of habitat bunds, incorporating green arisings from the site and recycled aggregates, to enhance a 35-hectare mitigation area.
  • The trapping and translocation phase began following the installation of 8KM of reptile fencing across challenging terrain, utilising specialised equipment and bespoke materials.
  • Collaborating with ground investigation teams, we installed fencing to safeguard archaeological and hydrological features, Heras fencing to create secure compounds and block off closed public rights of way, whilst effectively managing risks posed by mine shafts, geological features, remnant debris, and stumps from previous large-scale forestry clearance.

Ecology

  • Our in-house ecologists led the project management of both the reptile translocation and associated breeding bird surveys, including innovative thermal image nightjar surveys conducted by FLIR equipped drone.
  • Working with a team of 25 ecologists, we provided Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) support to our team throughout the translocation exercise.
  • Furthermore, our botanists supported the client with comprehensive surveys of an additional 35-hectare off-site mitigation area, informing future habitat management proposals.

Outcomes

  • We effectively managed and supervised the site whilst acting as Principal Contractor, ensuring CDM and regulatory compliance of in-house ad external contractors.
  • We further installed and maintained fully CDM-compliant welfare facilities for 60 ecology operatives and 20 ground investigation staff.
  • We devised solutions for ongoing arson issues, by installing Fire Watch personnel, creating precautionary fire breaks, and delivering community engagement to improve awareness of the project and potential implications of fires. No further fires were recorded throughout 2023.
  • We successfully managed run-off and the risk of soil erosion, by advising on retention of root mass to stabilise soil until main works commenced, bespoke fencing sections along existing natural drainage routes to prevent wash out of reptile fencing.
  • By engaging with the local community through volunteering on local projects and participating in events, we improved understanding of the drivers behind the scheme and were able to secure local employees to support works on site.
